RBI may give payment bank licence to post dept by Sept: Prasad

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) is expected to grant a payments bank licence to the postal department by September for operating Post Bank, Communications and Information Technology Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad said on Thursday.

This will enable the network of 154,000 post offices (including 125,000 rural post offices) to offer banking services to the masses in the country, he said.

While there was a core banking solution only in 236 post offices till this government came to power last year, the number of such facilities was now extended to 2,590 post offices, he said.
