The government on Thursday chose Madhya Pradesh Tourism Development Corporation chief Ashwani Lohani to be the next AI chairman and managing director. The appointments committee of Cabinet gave 57-year-old Lohani, a 1980 batch Indian Railway Service of Mechanical Engineers officer, a tenure of three years at AI.

"He is going to take over very soon. A lot of thought has gone into selecting the AI chief," aviation secretary R N Choubey, who was among those who chose Lohani, said. Lohani will succeed senior IAS officer Rohit Nandan, who completed four years as AI chairman on Thursday and is now empanelled as secretary. "Turnaround specialist" Lohani will be working in close coordination with Choubey, who was recently brought in by the PMO to speed up things at the aviation ministry, which has had an extremely lacklustre performance in the NDA rule.

Lohani's name figures in the Limca Book of Records' 2007 edition for earning four engineering degrees at a young age of 21 in 1979 Share Market Astrology
