Southern Railway earns Rs 2,367 from passengers

Southern Railway earned a revenue of Rs 2,367 crore from passengers in the first half of financial year 2015-16, an 11.3% increase in comparison with that in the corresponding period last year.

Talking to reporters here on Wednesday, Southern Railway general manager Vashishta Johri said: "Passenger revenue increased in Southern Railway though there was a marginal decrease all over India. The number of passengers were less when the year began but we were able to make up since April. The number of passengers has increased as more special trains and unreserved specials were introduced and more coaches were added." 

He also said that average number of passengers in a month increased from 64 million in April to 68 million in September this year. 

The zone introduced 92 Sabarimala specials. Around 74 coaches were permanently added to different trains, 4,862 coaches were temporarily augmented as against the 3,200 last year, and 762 special trains were run as against 414 trains last year and 2,290 unreserved trains were run. 

"Station specific ticket checking drives also increased ticket sales and earnings," he added.

"The trains had an occupancy of 90% to 100%. The response from the passengers was good. We are not running too many Suvidha specials but are focussing on Chennai-Thiruvananthapuram route and Chennai-Madurai route," he added.
